Your 12 Days Best of Uganda Cultural tour will include;
On the first day of your cultural tour, you will explore the major cultural – traditional sites in Kampala – Uganda’s capital. You will visit the Kabaka’s palace, Kabaka’s lake, the royal Kasubi tombs, the Uganda museum and the African crafts markets. When dusk sets in, you will check in at a comfortable hotel for the night.
You will set out to explore the Sezibwa falls found along the Kampala – Jinja highway. A Buganda heritage site, the Sezibwa falls emanate from River Sezibwa which is believed to have been birthed by a woman. The falls are 23 feet high and their location offers a beautiful scenery for leisure and relaxation. While there, you will embark on a nature walk, birding excursion and rock climbing adventure.
Your cultural tour excursions will include visiting the Sipi falls – a series of three waterfalls found on the edge of Mount Elgon. The Sipi falls area is the beginning point for many hikes up Mt Elgon. You will explore the falls and embark on a guided nature walk in the area.
After breakfast, you will embark on a hike to the summit of Mount Elgon. You will climb via the Budadiri route, follow the Sasa trail and arrive the peak. You will descend via the Sipi trail, back into the Sipi Falls. Later in the day, you will embark on a community tour to encounter the native Bagishu, a tribe of indigenous Arabica coffee growers. You will embark on a coffee tour with a knowledgeable guide who will take you through the process of coffee farming, processing and roasting.
Your next adventure will be a tour of the Nyero rock paintings. Ranking among Uganda’s most significant rock art, the paintings are a set of six shelters with colour engravings dating back to 1250 CE. You will spend the night in Kumi town or drive on to a town closer to Kidepo Valley National Park – your next destination.
You will transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park found in Karamoja in north-eastern Uganda. When you arrive, you will embark on a game drive in the wildlife concentrated Narus Valley. The major highlight of the trip to the park is an encounter with the pastoral Karamoja, a tribe of native cattle keepers who draw their livelihood from pastoralism. You will also encounter the Dodoth farmers and IK people.
You will embark on a transfer to the south-western region, to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for an encounter with the pygmy Batwa. You will enjoy a splendid view of the lush greenery, steep hills, and tranquil countryside, that is characteristic of Western Uganda. When you arrive at the park in the late evening, you will have a guided nature walk before retiring to your lodge.
The day’s first adventure will be a gorilla trekking excursion – Bwindi is recognized for harbouring almost half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas. You will encounter a habituated gorilla family and spend an hour observing its members. In the afternoon, you will embark on the famous ‘Batwa cultural trail’. The Batwa, a tribe of pygmy people who live in the forest will demonstrate their culture and way of life in a series of dramatized performances.
You will embark on a drive to Semuliki National Park, the location of the noteworthy Sempaya hot springs. When you arrive at the park, you will visit the springs. The Sempaya hot springs are a pair of boiling geysers – the female inner spring and the male outer spring. The two springs bear great cultural and spiritual significance in the community; the female spring called Nyasimbi is believed to be the home of a female spirit responsible for fertility and childbirth while the male spring – Mumbugu is believed to be the resting place of a male God responsible for prosperity.
You will have a game drive through the savannah grasslands of Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve. After the excursion, you will go for a guided nature walk and birding excursion in the park. Before evening sets in, you will embark on a drive to Fort Portal town.
The day’s adventure will include visiting the major cultural sites in Fort Portal. You will explore; the fascinating ‘Amabere ga nyina Mwiru’ caves, the Tooro palace, the Karambi Royal tombs, and Nakayima witch’s tree. Your excursions will end when dusk sets in.
At the climax of your cultural tour, you will visit Igongo Cultural Center in Mbarara. A visit to the Center will give you great insight into the Ankole culture. You will encounter many traditional and cultural artefacts. After having lunch, you will embark on your drive back to Kampala. This will mark the end of your safari.
